Project Description:


This 6 months project was designed to raise women’s awareness about their legal rights in Erbil and surrounding areas. It also aimed at providing legal, social and psychological services for victimized women via a hotline service. WEO conducted 10 awareness sessions in different areas for female and male participants to raise awareness of women’s rights. A booklet on women’s rights was developed and distributed in the awareness sessions. Brochures were also developed to increase the general public’s consciousness of the services provided such as the hotline and the email from where the victimized women can seek help. From this project WEO has created a database which includes all the cases received.

 Project Activities:  

  • This project raised awareness of women’s legal rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq through 10 training sessions in Erbil and surrounding villages and towns, attended by 250 participants (200 women and 50 men)

  • A hotline on women’s rights for four months.

  • Provided legal aid to 10 women in need who were identified through the hotline.

  • Published a booklet on women’s rights and estate law and distributed 500 copies.

  • Published a brochure on women’s rights and distributed it to 500 women.

  • Provided a seminar on female genital mutilation.

  • Prepared and aired 6 radio programs on women’s rights.

  • Created a database on women’s involvement in politics which is being used for ongoing advocacy purposes.

  •  A seminar was held on 25th of November advocating to ending all discrimination against women.

  • A committee was established to continue pressing for quota for women’s participation in government, Parliament, and the judiciary, and ongoing meetings are being held. 

Project Goal:


The project’s main goal was to assist women in accessing and obtaining their rights by international standards, supporting them and giving legal assistance and awareness to them. Trying to help and support women that had cases in the courts.

 

Project Objectives

  • Raise awareness of women’s legal rights in the Kurdistan region in relation to international women’s rights, both for women and for the communities in which they live.

  • Reduce domestic violence and mistreatment of women in legal processes.

  • Provide direct legal aid servcies to women in need.

  • Investigate the reasons for lack of enforcement of laws protecting women, and examine sources of corruption and abuse in the progress of their cases in court.

  • Identifying gaps in Kurdistan region laws.
