Women Empowerment Radio
On the 2nd of November 2011, the opening ceremony of the WEO radio station was held at the WEO headquarters. The ceremony which was attended by the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, various Members of the KRG Parliament, Deputy Minister of Culture and Youth, and other representatives from government sectors and members of civil society organizations.
Ms. Suzan Aref (Director-WEO) started the ceremony with a brief speech regarding the organization and its newly opened radio station; she stated “WEO radio will be a voice for all women; this will be a great doorway to solving social problems and help empower women in civil society and government. WEO voice will gather all the members of civil society and government, to show the problems and how to solve them; by giving proper suggestions from experts". Throughout out her speech and in the end Ms. Suzan thanked the Dutch embassy for their support in having this radio; she admitted that this day will be one marked in history.
The WEO radio station will focus on helping and solving women issues. Its slogan is as follows: Women’s Voice and Hope to Freedom. Although the Radio opened on the 2ndof November 2011, the station has been broadcasting tests for about a month with frequency 91.8 Hz. On the 1st of November 2011 the radio station began its normal broadcasting.
WEO radio station broadcasts normally from 9:00AM until 6:00PM, 6 days a week. During the week the radio hosts 6 main programs, that each has their chosen topics regarding such issues like violence against women. The programs include advice sessions that update listeners on topics such as civil and social society, health sector, and other topics like psychological studies and free legal help. Each radio show has its designated guest which is chosen with respect to the topic of the program. Along with the above mentioned programs the radio also hosts special programs regarding ongoing WEO projects.
Radio shows are hosted live on air or previously recorded. At the same time the station takes calls from listeners, on the following numbers 0750-361-2004 and 0750-361-2005. All their questions will be answered by the experts and respective hosts. Other than the mentioned programs there are a variety of programs like general information program such as; programs about educational reading books regarding needs of women and the environment.
WEO Radio Programs
Life’s theatre program:
This program discusses women’s issues such as, psychologically, social and health, suicide help line, lack of abilities and poverty.
Behind the border program:
It holds women issues with the society and government’s inactivity in solving issues like honor killing, circumcision, abandon their husbands or taking a second wife (polygamy).
This program discusses various reports and documents regarding government institutions and civil society.
This program includes variety of modern issues, with growing of life state as decreasing educational level, environment, and disabilities.
Women and Religion Program:
This program includes all women issues related to religion.
Organization activities program:
Speaks about WEO's activities and ongoing projects.
This monthly program, which is repeated once weekly, speaks about civil society organizations and other governmental institutions.
Aso health program:
A health program which studies modern diseases (their symptoms and needed cure) in society and around the world. By taking calls and giving priority to women, it is hosted by expert doctor Mr. Adel Gulani.
This programs focus of psychology and psychological diseases, and their psychological cure as needed. Listeners are welcome to call and ask questions about this topic. This program is hosted by Doctor and psychology professor at Salahadden University Dr. Yosif.
Education and Social program:
A special program regarding educational problems (from primary stage until college stage) all the topics will discuss issues and give suggestions on how to solve them.
