Seminar in Copenhagen
Seminar on Shelter Services: How to work with male abusers, families and children of women victims of violence
WHEN: 27th – 29th of June 2011

WEO participated in this very interesting and relevant seminar on shelter work hosted by the Danish organizations Danner and Kvinfo, in Copenhagen. The cooperating partners in this series of 4 seminars on shelters and shelter work in Denmark and in the MEAN region was; Union de L’action Feminine, LOKK, the Danish Center for Information on Women and Gender, KAFA and Ligue Démocratique pour les Droites de la Femme.
Attending this seminar was Danish organizations working with battered women and representatives from many countries in the MENA region also working with battered women, male abusers or shelters. Representatives came from Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and WEO represented Iraq.

The seminar was practically oriented so the presentations given focused on the work that is being done in the different countries, how it is done and what experiences and lessons have been learned from the work. In the program were also many practical activities such as visits to Danish shelters and organizations working with women’s issues.

The topic of the first day was children and violence. How to approach a child who has experienced violence in the family, different techniques to facilitate the child sharing his or her experience, thoughts, fears and concerns about the situation the family is in. What a child needs when facing violence in the family.

The topic of the second day was male abusers. Amongst other presentations a representative from the Lebanese organization KAFA presented their work on rehabilitation of male abusers in a Middle Eastern context.

The third day was dedicated to the family. How practically the work with battered women is being conducted in Denmark, what services they provide and how they rehabilitate the women and their children.

The conference was very interesting for WEO since it was practically orientated and a lot of the tools presented can be amended and used here in our context by our staff in the hotline, in the listening and counseling center and in the Legal Assistance Scheme program. It was clear that most other countries in the MENA region are far ahead in this field than Kurdistan and there is a lot that we can learn from others experience. The conference facilitated a lot of networking for WEO and we hope to be able to initiate cooperation with partners from the MENA region as well as from Denmark.
